The guillotine method is a cutting approach where every cut runs all the way through the full sheet (or the current cut-off piece) from edge to edge, with no “plunge” cuts into the middle of a blank. That’s a constraint, but it matches how most panel saws and ordinary circular saws actually work — unlike more complex, but less practical for real production, “free-form” nesting of arbitrarily shaped parts.
Guillotine cutting is slightly less efficient in material-usage percentage than the theoretical tightest possible packing, but it’s achievable on real equipment without a CNC router, which is why it’s the standard for most woodworking and furniture shops.
Kerf — Why It’s Not a Minor Detail
Every saw cut physically removes a strip of material as wide as the blade itself (typically 3-5mm for circular saws). When laying out 10-15 parts on a single sheet, those millimetres add up to centimetres of lost space — if kerf isn’t factored into the layout up front, the actual size of the cut parts will end up smaller than planned, or some parts simply won’t fit on a sheet that, in theory, should have had room for them.
Sheet Edge Trim — Accounting for Manufacturing Defects
The edges of many sheet materials — especially where the sheet was stored or transported — often have chips, dents, or unevenness; using that zone to cut parts is risky. Standard practice is to reserve a margin (typically 5-15mm depending on material and storage conditions) around the sheet’s perimeter as a technical “trim” that’s excluded from the layout.
Minimizing Waste vs. Minimizing Cuts
There are two different approaches to what counts as an “optimal” layout:
- Minimum waste — a layout that leaves the least unused material. Usually more cost-effective when the material is expensive.
- Minimum cuts — a layout that requires fewer saw passes, even if it leaves a bit more waste by area. More cost-effective when labour time, not material, is the main cost driver — for example, when cutting is billed by the hour at a shop.
For most small projects the difference between these approaches is minor, but on large runs (kitchens, multi-unit furniture sets) it’s worth choosing a strategy deliberately.
Multiple Materials in One Project
Real furniture projects rarely use just one material — laminated particleboard fronts, thinner fibreboard backs, a particleboard countertop of a different thickness. The right approach is to calculate the layout separately for each material (parts of different materials can’t physically end up on the same sheet), while tracking cost and parts for the whole project together, instead of switching between separate calculations.
