Particleboard Cutting Guide: How to Avoid Chipping and Save on Material
Particleboard (chipboard) is the most affordable sheet material for furniture, which is exactly why every poorly used centimetre of a sheet is felt more sharply. At the same time, particleboard is one of the trickiest materials to cut — its loose, pressed-chip structure chips easily along the edge without the right approach.

The chips a board is pressed from aren’t uniform in density — the top and bottom layers are denser, the core is looser. Cutting with a regular coarse-tooth blade chips the laminated or painted top layer, especially where the blade exits. A clean cut in particleboard (especially laminated melamine board) needs a fine-tooth blade, and in professional production, a machine with a scoring saw — which first makes a shallow scoring cut from the top, then the main cut from below.
Why Edge Banding Particleboard Isn’t Optional
Unlike MDF, an exposed particleboard edge doesn’t just look unfinished — it’s also mechanically vulnerable and moisture-sensitive. The pressed chips at a cut edge readily absorb moisture, swell, and crumble over time without edge-band protection. So when planning a particleboard layout, edge banding should be treated not as a cosmetic extra but as a mandatory production step — especially for kitchen and bathroom furniture, where humidity is higher.
Saving Material — Where Particleboard Differs From MDF and Plywood
Since particleboard is the most budget-friendly material, saving on layout works a bit differently here: a single sheet costs less, but particleboard projects are more often done at larger volumes (batch furniture, made-to-order kitchens), so even a small percentage of extra layout waste multiplies across the sheets in a project. This is exactly where using offcuts from previous projects, instead of always cutting fresh full sheets, pays off most.
Grain direction only matters for laminated melamine board with a decorative wood-look pattern — for plain particleboard with no pattern, a part can be rotated freely during layout, just as with MDF.
